Workshop to examine hydro's role to stem carbon emissions

Experts from industry and government are taking part April 7-8 in a workshop to examine the advantages of hydroelectric generation in coping with efforts to avoid emissions of carbon into the atmosphere.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is sponsoring the EPRI Workshop on Hydropower in a Carbon-Constrained Future: Applications and Markets. Exelon Generation, host of the event in Mendenhall, also is offering a tour of the Exelon Trade Floor in Kennett Square, Pa., where the utility conducts wholesale power trading and risk management activities.

President Obama called on Congress Feb. 24 to send him legislation that places a market-based cap on U.S. carbon emissions while promoting more renewable energy, and to "save our planet from the ravages of climate change."

As a result of such initiatives, EPRI said, more attention is being given to hydropower's critical role and value in generation networks.

"Due to its strong advantages, hydropower is well positioned to play an increasingly important role in a carbon-constrained energy future," an EPRI statement said.

Workshop attendees are to learn from experts and project owners about new opportunities and incentives for providing renewable generation. Sessions also will cover hydro-specific services, such as pumped storage, that can assist in delivery of power from other renewable and low-emission sources.

Participants also will have an opportunity to visit Exelon's 572-MW Conowingo Dam on the lower Susquehanna River in Maryland. (HNN 11/25/08)
