Russian firm to equip Panama's 85-MW Baitun

Russian equipment supplier Energomashexport Corp. LLC has received a turnkey contract to supply electro-mechanical equipment for the 85-MW Baitun hydroelectric project on Panama's Chiriqui Viejo River.

Energomashexport was named winning bidder for the work by Mexican construction company Carso Infraestructura y Construccion SA de CV (CICSA). CICSA's sister company, Impulsora del Desarrollo y el Empleo en America Latina SA (IDEAL) received concessions in 2007 to develop and operate Baitun and the 56-MW Bajo de Mina hydro project, on the Chiriqui Viejo near the Costa Rica border, for an investment of US$250 million. (HNN 5/8/07)

Energomashexport is to perform general design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of all electro-mechanical equipment including two 42.5-MW turbine-generators with governors, excitation systems, and auxiliary equipment. Work is to be performed from 2009-2012. The first unit is to go on line in January 2012, followed by the second in March 2012.

The Russian firm received a similar contract in January 2008 for Bajo de Mina. It said the first shipments of equipment to that project are to be made in the first quarter of 2009.

Work under the Bajo de Mina contract is to be performed through 2010. Its first unit is to be commissioned in March 2010, followed by the second unit in April of that year.

Energomashexport ships first unit to Brazil's 95.6-MW Corumba 3

Energomashexport said it shipped the first set of hydropower turbine equipment in January to the 95.6-MW Corumba 3 hydroelectric project on Brazil's Corumba River in Goais State.

The Russian firm said the first 47.8-MW unit, manufactured by Tyazhmash JSC, included turbine, rotor, wicket gate, air admission valve, and servomotors. Energomashexport said its Brazilian client, Energ Power, a partner in Corumba 3, booked two airplanes, an AN124 and a Boeing 747, to transport the more than 100 tons of equipment.

In May 2007, operating consortium Consorcio Empreendedor Corumba III diverted the Corumba River at Luziana for construction of the dam. (HNN 7/17/07) The project is expected to require an investment of 340 million reais (US$181.9 million). It already has a power sales agreement with consortium member CEB, the distribution utility for Brasilia's federal district.
