Nigeria seeks studies of dam, spillway rehab at 540-MW Jebba

Power Holding Co. of Nigeria (PHCN) invites expressions of interest to perform geotechnical studies and engineering design of dam and spillway rehabilitation at the 540-MW Jebba hydroelectric project. Responses are due March 26.

The World Bank's International Development Association approved a loan to Autorite du Bassin du Niger, including Benin, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria, for a program of water resources development and durable management of ecosystems in the Niger River Basin, including rehabilitation of Jebba and the 760-MW Kainji hydroelectric project. (HNN 9/5/08)

Government-owned PHCN, Nigeria's national implementation agency for the basin program, is recruiting consultants for the study of civil rehabilitation of the spillway stilling basin and Auxiliary Dam No. 3 at Jebba. Jebba and Kainji fell into disrepair during Nigeria's military period.

Consultant work is to include geotechnical investigation of eroded areas of the spillway stilling basin to design piles that will support the foundations of retaining walls to be built in the eroded areas. Consultants also are to design concrete retaining walls and protections in the spillway stilling basin and tailrace.

The work also is to conduct geotechnical investigations to determine the cause of excessive discharge in drainage hole No. 53 in the auxiliary dam and to design remedial measures. Finally, the consultants are to prepare technical specifications for bidding documents to procure the remedial construction work.

A team of civil and geotechnical engineers and experts are to expend 15 person-months over seven calendar months.

Expressions of interest are due to the first address below by March 26. For information, contact:
o Eng. M.A. Ganiyu, Manager, PHCN Project Management Unit, No. 7, Kampala St., Wuse II, Abuja, Nigeria; Tel/Fax: (234) 9-4136684; E-mail: maganiyu@nepapmu.org;
