      Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff has issued a final environmental impact statement recommending the relicensing of 636-MW Smith Mountain pumped-storage project on the Roanoke River in southern Virginia.
    • 08/24/2009 -- U.S., Maine coordinate hydrokinetic project review
      The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the state of Maine have signed a memorandum of understanding to coordinate procedures and schedules for reviewing hydrokinetic energy projects in state waters of Maine.
    • 08/25/2009 -- Feasibility study for Racine hydro project sought
      McGinnis Inc. has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to study the feasibility of building a hydrokinetic power project about 500 feet from the Racine Locks and Dam on the Ohio River.
    • 08/27/2009 -- FERC certifies improved 140.4-MW Comerford for tax credits
      The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has certified efficiency improvements at the 140.4-MW Comerford hydroelectric plant in New Hampshire to be eligible for renewable energy production tax credits.
    • 08/31/2009 -- $11 million dedicated to water power research
      The Obama administration is awarding up to $11 million to a series of national research laboratories for the development of advanced water power technologies, including hydrokinetic systems.
    • 09/03/2009 -- U.S. appeals court overturns FERC relicense of 49.8-MW School Street
      A federal appeals court has overturned the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's relicensing of the 49.8-MW School Street hydroelectric project and ordered the panel to reconsider whether it should have entertained a rival proposal for a 100-MW Cohoes Falls project on the Mohawk River in upstate New York.
    • 09/09/2009 -- New York City files notice to license four-plant hydro development
      New York City has filed a notice of intent to apply for a hydropower license for the 29.75-MW West of Hudson hydroelectric project, apparently disregarding a U.S. senator’s plea to include a local electric cooperative in development of the project on four New York City water supply reservoirs.
    • 09/15/2009 -- Water power projects to receive $14.6 million from DOE
      The U.S. Department of Energy said it will award up to $14.6 million to 22 advanced water power projects to improve the viability and performance of hydrokinetic technology and conventional hydropower plants.
    • 09/23/2009 -- Hydropower capacity in China to double
      The Chinese government is expecting a boom in the construction of new hydropower capacity, according to a state-owned news service in China.
