The government received US$45 million from the World Bank for the Tana and Beles Integrated Water Resources Development Project, which is intended to develop enabling institutions and investments for integrated planning, management, and development in the Tana and Beles subbasins to accelerate sustainable growth. A report on the Tana and Beles Integrated Water Resources Development Project listed institutional weaknesses in the basin that need to be addressed to ensure growth in the basin is economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. Among activities in the basin is construction of the Beles hydro project, which will have a substantial effect on flows from Lake Tana and in the Beles River, the report said. (HNN 1/23/07)
