Niger seeks civil work, hydro-mechanical equipment for 125-MW Kandadji

The government of Niger invites applications for pre-qualification for civil construction and hydro-mechanical equipment for the 125-MW Kandadji Dam on the Niger River. Responses to separate solicitations are due February 2, 2009.

Officials of the African Development Bank Group and the government of Niger signed loan and grant agreements in November to help finance the Kandadji Ecosystems Regeneration and Niger Valley Development Program, which includes construction of Kandadji Dam. (HNN 11/27/08) The government has said financing for the hydropower station is due to come from a public-private partnership.

The project includes construction of a dam for regulating the flow of the Niger River in order to provide the water needed for irrigation, drinking water, sanitation, ecology, grazing, and fisheries. About 629 gigawatt-hours of electricity will be provided annually as a by-product that will make the structure as profitable as possible, the bank said.

The government's high commission on Niger Valley management, Haut Commissariat a l'Amenagement de la Vallee du Niger, issued two invitations for pre-qualification of contractors and suppliers.
