  • Mozambique seeks grid studies to link new hydro projects

Mozambique utility Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM) invites expressions of interest for two studies of a transmission backbone system to deliver power from proposed new hydro and thermal power plants to southern Mozambique. Responses to two solicitations are due December 19 and 22.

With funding from the World Bank, Mozambique plans develop an integrated transmission system designed to handle increased capacity from several large power projects in Tete Province expected to total 7,000 MW. A pre-feasibility study was completed in September. (HNN 10/25/07)

Tete, in northwest Mozambique, is the site of the existing 2,040-MW Cahora Bassa hydroelectric project on the Zambezi River, as well as the proposed 800- to 1,200-MW Cahora Bassa North hydro project (HNN 12/2/08), the proposed 1,500-MW Mphanda Nkuwa hydro project (potentially expanding to 2,400 MW) (HNN 10/30/08), and other proposed plants. In July, Mozambique said it planned to invite foreign investors to build hydro projects totaling up to 14,000 MW in 100 locations including some in Tete. (HNN 7/23/08)

In one solicitation, EDM seeks expressions of interest by noon December 19 to the address below from consultants to perform a technical and economic feasibility study for the Mozambican Integrated Transmission Backbone System, called the CESUL Transmission Project. The work is to require ten months. Expressions of interest in three copies must be labeled "Consultancy Services for the Feasibility Study for Mozambique Regional Transmission Development Project - Technical and Economic Feasibility Study for Mozambique Integrated Transmission Backbone System (CESUL Transmission Project) in Mozambique."

In the other solicitation, EDM seeks expressions of interest by noon December 22 to the address below from consultants to prepare an environmental and social impact assessment and a resettlement policy framework for the CESUL project. The work is to require eight months. Expressions of interest in three copies must be labeled "Consultancy Services for Mozambique Regional Transmission Development Project - Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Resettlement Policy Framework (RPF) for Mozambican Integrated Transmission Backbone System (CESUL Transmission Project) in Mozambique."
