It was announced in June that the Swiss unit of Andritz VA Tech Hydro received a contract worth 48.15 million euros (US$74.97 million) for design-build refurbishment of Edea, whose 14 units were constructed from 1949 to 1975. (HNN 6/25/08)
Andritz VA Tech Hydro said it is to replace turbine-generators of Units 1, 2, and 3, including mechanical and electrical auxiliaries, unit transformers, electrical balance of plant, intakes, draft tubes, cranes, and automation and control systems. Each unit is to be upgraded to 49.2 MW from 35.3 MW, with work completed by 2011.
Andritz VA Tech Hydro also received a contract to renovate four penstocks at Song Loulou, one of the largest hydro projects in Africa, with eight 48-MW turbine-generators. (HNN 3/6/07) The company has performed other major rehabilitation work at Song Loulou over seven years.
The European Investment Bank and AES SONEL, which is 56 percent owned by AES Corp. of the United States, signed a 65 million euro (US$82.6 million) agreement in 2007 to partially finance AES Sonel's refurbishment program, including Edea and 396-MW Song Loulou.
