OPT launched the unit under the company's ongoing program with the U.S. Navy for installation of PowerBuoys off the U.S. Marine base at Kaneohe Bay. (HNN 10/5/07) The unit will be connected to the Oahu power grid. OPT also said the Navy added $300,000 funding for the program to provide for extended operation of the PowerBuoy system.
OPT announced installation of the Kaneohe Bay unit Nov. 12 a mile off the coast of Oahu, in 100 feet of water. Resembling an ocean buoy, it is based on OPT's proprietary design. The unit is compact and modular in design, generating power by moving up and down on a central spar as waves pass by.
In October, OPT commissioned a 40-kW PowerBuoy system in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of New Jersey, also under contract from the Navy. (HNN 11/7/08) In September, OPT said it deployed its first commercial wave-power generator in Spain, part of 1.39-MW Santona project. (HNN 9/24/08)
