The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved US$30 million in financing to assist construction of Pakistan's 106-MW Golen Gol hydroelectric project on the Golen Gol River.
OFID, the lending arm of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), approved two funding agreements of US$15 million each. The agreements were signed November 4 in Vienna, Austria, by OFID Director-General Suleiman J. Al-Herbish and Pakistan Ambassador Shahbaz.
With preliminary work on the project already under way, OFID's financial assistance is to be used for procurement, installation, and testing of transmission lines and substations.
Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) recruited consultants in April for design drawings, contract administration, and management of Golen Gol (also spelled Golan Gol). (HNN 3/12/08) It previously pre-qualified bidders for two lots of civil works and for electro-mechanical equipment.
The run-of-river project is proposed for the Golen Gol River, a tributary of the Mastuj River in Chitral District of Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province. It is to include a diversion weir, headrace canal and tunnel, vertical and pressure shaft, and surge shaft and chambers, with a design discharge of 30 cms and average annual energy production of 436 gigawatt-hours.
A feasibility study was completed previously in collaboration with Germany's technical assistance organization, Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ).
