Niger Basin environmental, socio-economic analysis awarded

The Niger Basin authority has awarded a contract to a Canadian bidder to evaluate the management of environmental and socio-economic information in the Niger River Basin.

L'Autorite du Bassin du Niger (ABN) awarded a US$184,365 contract to CRC SOGEMA in association with Centre d'Applications et de Recherches en Teledetection (CARTEL) of Universite de Sherbrooke, of Canada. The winning bid was chosen from among four competitors.

ABN had called for an engineering and design firm with experience in the field of environment and specializing in problems of management of data and environmental and socio-economic information. The winning venture is to: review previous documents of site visits and meetings with institutions; identify agencies producing basin data and analyze its sufficiency; create a data base of standardized information, and define relevant indicators for sustainable development of the Niger Basin. ABN member states include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad.
