Myanmar signs Thai, Singapore firms to build 600-MW Taninthayi

Myanmar's Ministry for Electric Power No. 1 has named firms from Thailand and Singapore to build the 600-MW Taninthayi hydroelectric project on the Taninthayi River in southern Myanmar.

The government-run New Light of Myanmar reported ministry officials signed a memorandum of understanding for Taninthayi with Italian-Thai Development Public Co. Ltd. of Thailand and Windfall Energy Services Ltd. or Singapore. The signing ceremony took place October 9 at the new Myanmar capital, Naypyitaw.

Following the signing, the report said, Italian-Thai President Premchai Karnasuta outlined issues related to the hydro project. Taninthayi is to be built in Taninthayi Division, 37 miles from Myeik on the Myanmar portion of the Malay Peninsula.

General finds 790-MW Yeywa 65 percent complete

Maj. Gen. Ohn Myint toured the 790-MW Yeywa hydroelectric project October 10, finding the project 65.5 percent complete, on Myanmar's Myitnge River, 31 miles from Mandalay.

New Light of Myanmar reported Yeywa's roller-compacted-concrete dam is 96 percent complete. The general examined all project features, including the power plant and approach tunnel of Yeywa, being developed by Ministry of Electric Power No. 1.

The ministry agreed in 2005 to buy US$125 million in equipment for Yeywa from China International Trust and Investment Corp. and Sinohydro Corp. China's Gezhouba Water and Power (Group) Co. Ltd. also signed a US$45 million contract to build the dam. Called the largest project of its kind in Myanmar, Yeywa is to generate 3.55 bilion kWh per year.

In September, India's government-owned hydro developer, NHPC Ltd., signed an agreement with the Myanmar government to develop the 1,200-MW Tamanthi and 600-MW Shwezaye hydroelectric projects on Myanmar's Chindwin River. (HNN 9/22/08)
