BC Hydro seeks bids to study fish passage for 900-MW Site C

BC Hydro seeks proposals to conduct a preliminary feasibility study for fish passage at the 900-MW Peace River Site C hydroelectric project. Proposals are due Oct. 20.

Earlier this year, BC Hydro initiated stakeholder consultations that could lead to project development. (HNN 6/11/08) In a second round of consultations, the utility will seek feedback on updated environmental, engineering, and other technical studies.

BC Hydro completed an initial project evaluation in December 2007. It also estimated capital costs for the project of C$5 billion to C$6.6 billion (US$4.4 billion to US$5.8 billion).

Site C would be the third hydroelectric project on the Peace River in northeast British Columbia, joining 2,730-MW G.M. Shrum and 694-MW Peace Canyon Dam. Sites A, B, C, D, and E were identified in 1958 as five potential sites for a third dam. In 1976, BC Hydro chose Site C after finding the other sites were not viable.

The tender document package, Preliminary Feasibility Fish Passage Study Peace River Site C (Q8-8550), may be obtained by completing and returning a form on the BC Bid Internet site, www.bcbid.gov.bc.ca, under www.publications.gov.bc.ca/bcbid/orderform/bchydro.pdf.
