Portugal utility awards equipment contract for 260-MW Alqueva 2

Energias de Portugal (EDP) has awarded a 94 million euro (US$138.3 million) contract for supply of turbine-generators and other equipment for the 260-MW Alqueva 2 pumped-storage project on Portugal's Guadiana River.

Alstom Hydro, in consortium with EFACEC Engenharia S.A. and SMM of Portugal, won the contract to equip Alqueva 2, an expansion of the 260-MW Alqueva hydro project. Alstom supplied two 130-MW units to the original Alqueva pumped-storage project, which has been operating since 2004.

Alstom Hydro, a joint venture of Alstom and Bouygues of France, is to supply two 130-MW pump-turbines, motor-generators, and other mechanical equipment. EFACEC Engenharia and SMM are to be responsible for the balance of plant and installation at the site, respectively. Other equipment being supplied includes transformers, substation and interconnection, command and control equipment, and auxiliary equipment. The work is to be completed in early 2012.

EDP awarded a 50 million euro (US$79.3 million) contract in June to a consortium of Zagope Construcoes e Engenharia SA and Sociedade de Construcoes Soares da Costa SA to build Alqueva 2. (HNN 7/3/08) The pumped-storage addition to the multipurpose Alqueva project includes a water intake, tunnels, and a new powerhouse.

EDP announced in June that Portugal's competition authority cleared it to operate Alqueva and the 10-MW Pedrogao project, also on the Guadiana. (HNN 6/23/08) EDP agreed in October 2007 to pay 636 million euros (US$907.4 million) for a concession to expand the projects and operate them for 35 years. EDP has estimated it would invest 156 million euros (US$222.5 million) to expand Alqueva and Pedrogao.

Alqueva 2 is among ten new projects, and five hydro project expansions, included in Portugal's national program of dams with high hydropower potential, Programa Nacional de Barragens com Elevado Potencial Hidroelectrico. (HNN 8/6/08)
