ScottishPower to refurbish nine hydropower plants

Utility ScottishPower announced August 19 a two-year, 20 million pound (US$37.3 million) investment to refurbish nine hydropower plants in three complexes in Scotland.

The investment is to carry out a range of civil works and equipment upgrades at the Cruachan, Galloway, and Lanark schemes, which total 562 MW. ScottishPower said the work will mean the Galloway and Lanark schemes will still be operating at 100 years of age in 2036 and 2027.

With no signs that the global markets will level off any time soon, hydro will continue to be an important aspect of our generation business and this is reflected in our investment, ScottishPower Generation Director Frank Mitchell said. Hydro is also very versatile and can be brought on line quickly when required, so is an essential element in guaranteeing secure supplies of power across the entire network.

The largest hydro plant is 440-MW Cruachan, built within Ben Cruachan mountain at Argyll. In 2002, ScottishPower commissioned a consortium led by VA Tech Hydro to renovate the plant and increase its output 30 percent.

The 109-MW Galloway scheme includes the 12-MW Carsfad, 2-MW Drumjohn, 14-MW Earlstoun, 24-MW Glenlee, 24-MW Kendoon, and 33-MW Tongland hydropower plants. The 16-MW Lanark scheme includes the 11-MW Bonnington and 5-MW Stonebyres hydro plants.

In 2003, ScottishPower commissioned Alstom Power Ltd. and Innogy plc to supply replacement turbine runners, guide vanes, and other equipment for Carsfad, Earlstoun, Drumjohn, and Stonebyres.
