
JSC Power Machines of Russia and its South American marketing partner, Energ Power Ltd. of Brazil, have received a 7 million euro (US$10.3 million) contract to equip the 82-MW Passo Sao Joao hydroelectric project being built on Brazil's Ijui River.
Power Machines said the contract with Brazilian utility Eletrosul Centrais Eletricas S.A. calls for supply of two 41-MW turbine-generators, with installation to be completed by early 2010.
Eletrosul began pouring concrete for Passo Sao Joao's spillway August 15 in a ceremony attended by Brazil's planning and energy development secretary, Marcio Zimmermann. Construction of the project began in November 2007 in Rio Grande do Sul State. (HNN 11/30/07)
The 290 million reais (US$178.8 million) investment includes a 21-meter-tall dam and a reservoir of 20.6 square kilometers. Project construction is to create 750 direct and 1,500 indirect jobs.
