The Department of Interior's Minerals Management Service has scheduled nine public workshops on proposed federal regulation of ocean energy project development on the Outer Continental Shelf.

The workshop schedule begins Aug. 7 and ends Aug. 28:
o Aug. 7, Washington, D.C.;
o Aug. 13, Seattle, Wash.;
o Aug. 14, Portland, Ore.;
o Aug. 15, San Francisco, Calif.;
o Aug. 19, Boston/Newton, Mass.;
o Aug. 20, Monmouth, N.J.;
o Aug. 26, New Orleans, La.;
o Aug. 27, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and
o Aug. 28, Savannah, Ga.

Additional meeting details are on the MMS Internet site, www.mms.gov/offshore. The link to the schedule is www.mms.gov/offshore/alternativeenergy/regstakeholdersmeetings.htm.

In the proposed rulemaking for developing alternative energy resources on the offshore Outer Continental Shelf, MMS maintains it is the lead federal agency with jurisdiction for regulating ocean and tidal energy projects in that area. The agency advanced ocean energy test area leasing off California and Florida in July. (HNN 7/25/08)

Comments on the proposal, MMS-2008-OMM-0012, are due Sept. 8. MMS has said it expects to complete the final rule by December 2008.
