  • Spain utility awards equipment contract for 852-MW La Muela 2

    07/15/2008
Spanish utility Iberdrola has awarded a contract to Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation to supply four pump-turbines and spherical valves for the 852-MW La Muela 2 pumped-storage project on Spain's Jucar River.

Voith Siemens said the 36 million euro (US$57.3 million) contract calls for supply of four 213-MW reversible pump-turbines to be installed in a new powerhouse at the existing reservoir of the 635-MW La Muela pumped-storage project. La Muela 2 is to begin operation in 2012.

The original La Muela plant has been in operation since the 1980s, utilizing Voith Siemens equipment.

Voith Siemens said La Muela 2 is to deliver reliable and uninterrupted power to the grid to make up for volatile supply from Spain's growing wind energy parks. It said pumped storage can bridge energy gaps by providing fast-responding backup capacity for changing winds.
