  • U.S. completes $5.34 million rehab of 152-MW Flaming Gorge

    06/24/2008
The Bureau of Reclamation announced completion of a $5.34 million rehabilitation program at the 151.95-MW Flaming Gorge hydro project, on the Green River in northeastern Utah.

Flaming Gorge, one of five power plants in the Colorado River Storage Project, was built in the early 1960s. (HNN 2/13/07)

Rehabilitation work included installing new turbine runners with stainless steel wicket gates in the project's three turbine-generating units. BuRec says new narrow gates increase flow and decrease head losses, especially at low head levels. With the new gates installed and the units operating, BuRec sees a 5 percent increase in efficiency.

VA Tech Voest MCE Corp. supplied the replacement runners, BuRec said. Other contractors included ABB, ELCO, and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.

The government declared the program substantially complete in May; several small items remain to be done. BuRec anticipates all tasks will be completed by September.
