China firm wins equipment contract for U.S. 4.4-MW Jordan

Developer Hydro Matrix L.P. has awarded a contract to China Huadian Engineering Co. to supply generating equipment for the 4.4-MW Jordan hydroelectric project on the Haw River in North Carolina.

Hydro Matrix said it met a June 15 deadline, set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to begin project construction, by awarding contracts for fabrication of new generating equipment and other structural parts. (HNN 7/25/07) Hydro Matrix submitted a start of construction filing and a project financing plan to FERC in June.

The licensee said it paid $50,000 to China Huadian to begin design work and fabrication of equipment. The supplier is to manufacture and deliver various pieces of equipment, including two turbines and generators, by the end of July 2009. Another company, China Chang Jiang Energy Corp., has begun fabricating a draft tube.

North Fork Electric Inc. is to construct other project features at the Corps of Engineers' B. Everett Jordan Dam in Chatham County. North Fork will be responsible for design, fabrication, and installation of: modules to house turbines, generators, and provide water passage; lifting equipment; and electrical and auxiliary mechanical systems.

Kleinschmidt Associates, the owner's engineer, will oversee the work, Hydro Matrix said. W.V. Hydro Inc. is general partner of Hydro Matrix L.P.

On-site construction of the project (No. 11437) is scheduled to begin in July 2009 and end in April 2010. Commissioning of equipment is planned for late 2009 or early 2010. Progress Energy Carolinas is to buy project power.

The FERC license issued in June 1997 authorized an 8-MW project utilizing 40 100-kW Hydromatrix turbine-generators in two modules to be installed in the intake tower of the existing dam. In March 2007, FERC amended the license to authorize instead a single 2.2-MW turbine-generator in each module for total capacity of 4.4 MW.
