
The World Bank board has endorsed a US$4.5 million grant from the bank's Global Environment Facility to improve electricity sector efficiency in Guinea, including rehabilitation work on the 75-MW Garafiri hydroelectric project.
The program's principal components include improvement of distribution efficiency, rehabilitation of production, strengthening of institutions, and technical aid. The program also anticipates improvement of generating facilities including hydroelectric production equipment for Garafiri, built in 1999 on the Konkoure River. (HNN 5/18/07)
The three-year program is co-financed by US$7.2 million from the World Bank's International Development Association, approved in 2006.
Utility Electricite de Guinee previously recruited consultants to assist engineering and technical supervision, tender preparation, business sector planning, and power sector policy.
