Lunar said full resource research and feasibility studies are to be completed by July, with the installation of a 1-MW pilot plant to be installed by March 2009. Each 1-MW unit has a turbine diameter of 11.5 meters and a fully ballasted weight in excess of 2,500 tons.
The full project's 300 turbines are to supply 300 MW to KOMIPO by December 2015.
Fabrication and installation of tidal turbines will be carried out by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, with Rotech Engineering providing design optimization and specialist components.
Rotech Tidal turbines developed by Lunar and Rotech Engineering, its technology partner, utilize a horizontal-axis symmetrical turbine with a ducted design. It has a removable central cassette and may be deployed on the seabed with minimal preparation, holding down operation and maintenance costs, Lunar said.
In 2007, Lunar and utility E.ON UK announced plans to develop an 8-MW tidal stream power project off the west coast of the U.K. at a site to be determined. (HNN 3/22/07)
