
Iceland national utility Landsvirkjun has awarded a contract to Istak hf. for finishing civil work at 700-MW Karahnjukar hydroelectric project in Fljotsdalur Valley of eastern Iceland.
The 666.2 million kronur (US$9.27 million) contract includes construction of a tailwater dam in Hafrahvammagljufur Canyon, tunnel portal construction, and road work. The work is to be completed by August 2009.
The finishing work is being performed at Karahnjukar Dam, the largest of three dams that form Halslon Reservoir on the Jokulsa a Dal and Jokulsa i Fljotsdal rivers.
Landsvirkjun began operating the first five units of Karahnjukar through November 2007, with the sixth and final unit, actually a backup unit, operating in January. (HNN 2/7/08)
