SN Power, Tata Power to develop hydro in Nepal, Bhutan, India

Norway's Statkraft Norfund Power Invest AS (SN Power) has signed an agreement with India's Tata Power Trading Co. to develop hydropower projects in Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

SN Power announced the memorandum of understanding February 7 at the same time it opened an office in Delhi in a ceremony with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

"Tata Power Trading Co. is the ideal partner for SN Power, both with regard to industrial capabilities and business principles," SN Power Executive Vice President Einar Stenstadvold said. "Together, we are in a unique position in terms of developing the vast reserves of renewable hydropower in the Himalayas."

SN Power has been established in India since 2004 through a 49 percent share in Malana Power Co., which has run-of-river hydropower plants in operation and under construction in Himachal Pradesh State.

In March 2007, SN Power received licenses to develop the total 500 MW Tamakoshi 2 and 3 hydropower projects in Nepal. It also is studying other projects in the area of a potential 340 MW. SN Power also holds a 50.4 percent stake in Himal Power Ltd. of Nepal, which operates the 60-MW Khimti hydropower project.

Malana operates the 86-MW Malana project and is developing the 192-MW Allain Duhangan project. (HNN 6/25/07) In 2007, Himachal Pradesh named Malana to develop the 200-MW Bara Bhangal (also spelled Bangahal) and 140-MW Chango-Yangthang (also spelled Youngthang) projects. (HNN 8/3/07)

Tata Power Trading Co. is a subsidiary of Tata Power Co. Ltd., which is part owner of a 1,200-kilometer transmission line linking India to Bhutan's 1,020-MW Tala hydroelectric project. (HNN 6/25/07) SN Power said available capacity on the line might be used to deliver power from new hydro projects in Nepal and Bhutan.
