Ecuador university to study four small hydro projects

Ecuador's power and renewable energy ministry has signed a contract with the Universidad de Cuenca to carry out feasibility studies of four small hydroelectric projects totaling 29.3 MW.

Business News Americas reported the projects, in Ecuador's Azuay Province, are Mandur, San Francisco 2, Solanda, and Uchucay.

The university's engineering school is to carry out the studies over five months. Construction is to take 1.5 years.

Universidad de Cuenca was one of four colleges that carried out studies for the government in 2006 of 23 hydroelectric projects totaling 168 MW. (HNN 10/27/06)

The government has decreed development of hydropower and other generating technologies to be a national priority to meet serious electricity shortages. The small projects are to provide Ecuador renewable, cheap, and clean energy.
