Developer seeks bids to electrify resettled areas from 1,070-MW Nam Theun 2

The developer of the 1,070-MW Nam Theun 2 hydroelectric project seeks bids for construction of electricity distribution systems in resettlement areas affected by construction of the project on Laos' Nam Theun River. Bids are due January 11, 2008.

The government of Laos received a grant from the World Bank's International Development Association for the Nam Theun Social and Environment Project, which includes the electrification program. The Asian Development Bank also recently approved funding that includes bank safeguard policies aimed at indigenous peoples, resettlement, and environmental issues of the project development. Nam Theun 2 Power Co. invites bidders to compete for any or all of three lots comprising electricity distribution in a total of 11 resettlement areas.

Nam Theun 2 Power is a venture of EDF International, Italian-Thai Development, Electricity Generating Plc. of Thailand, and Laos government-owned Electricite du Laos. The project includes a 39-meter-tall dam, a 450-square-kilometer reservoir, and a diversion of water from the Nam Theun to another Mekong River tributary, the Xe Bang Fai River.
