Companies propose tidal project for Canada's Bay of Fundy

Maritime Tidal Energy Corp. of Halifax and Marine Current Turbines of Bristol, United Kingdom, are preparing a joint proposal for submittal to Nova Scotia's Department of Energy to deploy a tidal power system in Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy.

Marine Current Turbines, developer of SeaGen, a tidal stream energy system, said the companies plan to deploy SeaGen technology in the bay, on Canada's Eastern Seaboard.

Marine Current Turbines plans to use knowledge gained from a 1.2-MW SeaGen commercial tidal system and work with a 300-kW SeaFlow tidal project in the Bristol Channel to tap into the potential that exists in the Bay of Fundy. Maritime Tidal Energy is an ocean resources company with expertise in mechanical and civil engineering, marine structures, oceanography, and computer modeling.

Nova Scotia's Department of Energy intends for tidal turbines to be operating in the Bay of Fundy during 2009, Marine Current Turbines said Oct. 30.

Earlier this year, Sustainable Development Technology Canada awarded a C$4 million (US$4.1 million) grant to Nova Scotia Power to support development of a 1-MW in-stream tidal demonstration project, also planned for the Bay of Fundy. (HNN 8/8/07)

Several wave and tidal power initial public offerings that could include Marine Current Turbines are set to hit the London market, according to analysts and sources close to several renewable energy companies. (HNN 11/6/07)
