Ertan began work in December 2006 on Jinping 2, the largest of five hydro projects to be built on the Yalong, forming a cascade with the 3,300-MW Ertan project. (HNN 12/14/06) In July, Ertan named U.S-based engineering firm MWH to provide engineering and construction management services for the 3,600-MW Jinping 1 project. (HNN 7/31/07)
The 29.8 billion renminbi (US$3.73 billion) Jinping 2 is to be built 17 kilometers downstream from Jinping 1 in southwestern China. Jinping 1 and 2 are to be followed by construction of 1,800-MW Guandi and 400-MW Tongzilin on the Yalong, officials have said. China's development plans call for more than 20 plants eventually to be built on the Yalong, a 1,571-kilometer tributary to the Yangtze River in Sichuan Province.
