  • Macedonia to offer 27 small hydro concessions

Macedonia's Ministry of Economy plans to seek bids in September for concessions to develop 27 hydropower projects of up to 5 MW each.

The government offers 20-year concessions for development on a design-build-operate-transfer basis. The September solicitation would be the second under a government program to develop 400 small hydro projects that would meet 10 percent of Macedonia's energy requirements.

The ministry took bids to develop 60 small sites in June. (HNN 2/16/07) It also has under way an invitation for pre-qualification to build the 68.2-MW Boshkov Most hydroelectric project on the Mala Reka River near Debar. Those responses are due September 3. (HNN 7/11/07)

Obligations of a small hydro concession winner include: elaboration of project documentation, providing all licenses and fulfilling all license requirements, constructing facilities according to documentation, managing and maintenance of facilities, and transfer of ownership to the government at the end of the concession.

Tender documents are to provide site-specific information on location, site access, land ownership, hydrological conditions, and possibilities to supply the distribution grid.
