  • Construction begins on Russia's 840-MW Zagorskaya 2

Russian government and hydro industry officials formally launched construction July 10 of the 840-MW Zagorskaya 2 pumped-storage project, aimed at meeting peaking capacity deficits and regulating the grid in European Russia.

The new plant is being built in the Moscow Region near the 1,200-MW Zagorskaya pumped-storage plant, also called Zagorsk, for an estimated 30 billion rubles (US$1.18 billion). The project is to go on line in 2010, with full completion in 2012.

Russian hydro generator HydroOGK awarded a contract to Power Machines of Russia to design, manufacture, and supervise installation of four 214-MW pump-turbines having a 6.3-meter diameter. Power Machines, which also equipped the original Zagorskaya plant in the 1980s, is to supply the Zagorskaya 2 units between 2009 and 2011.

Zagorskaya 2 is part of Russia's master plan for energy facilities through 2020. Last year, utility monopoly Unified Energy Systems said it plans to invest 330 billion rubles (US$12.36 billion) in hydroelectric facilities, including Zagorskaya 2, through 2009. (HNN 8/9/06)

HydroOGK's construction program also includes building the Leningradskaya and Tsentralnaya pumped-storage projects.
