Chinese firm signed to build Indonesia's 110-MW Jatigede

The Indonesian government has signed a US$239 million contract with a Chinese company to build the 110-MW Jatigede Dam hydroelectric project on the Cimanuk River in Indonesia's West Java State.

SinoHydro Corp. of China is building the project with four Indonesian engineering firms. Chinese work accounts for 70 percent of the total contract amount. The project is funded by preferential export buyer's credit from the Export-Import Bank of China.

The contract, signed April 30 in the Indonesia Public Project Department, includes a 110-meter-tall rockfill dam, diversion system, powerhouse, tailwater tunnel, and hydraulic metal work including four spillway radial gates. Construction is to take 65 months.

Indonesia Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto told Indonesia's Antara News the contract price was negotiated for a year, with SinoHydro agreeing to lower its bid by US$48 million. The contract still exceeds the Chinese loan commitment of US$200 million.

Jatigede, which includes an irrigation project, has been on the drawing board for years. Originally it was listed as a 175-MW project with plans for eventual expansion to 300 MW.
