The multi-nation Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) invites submission of concept notes proposing trans-boundary development strategies, including energy projects, to benefit multiple nations in the basin. Submissions are due April 16.
Concept notes are invited under the Nile Trans-boundary Development Facility, a funding mechanism to finance research activities that lead to improved trans-boundary investments in the Nile Basin. (HNN 3/30/07) Notes are sought under five themes for 2007: food security, energy, water and natural resources management, cross-border trade, and benefits sharing.
Under the energy theme, the solicitation cites as an example the regional Rusumo Falls hydroelectric and multipurpose project, which includes a 61.5-MW Rusumo Falls hydro plant and related transmission system to be developed on the Kagera River in Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Uganda. Concept notes must be submitted in a standard format under guidelines available on the Nile Basin Initiative Internet site, www.nilebasin.org, under Procurement. Submissions are to be screened by the project management unit and by an outside expert.
Resources available are estimated at a maximum of US$50,000, with the intention to support at least one proposal per NBI country.
Concept notes are due April 16, with review and decisions to be made by May 7. Commissioning of full proposals is expected in June.
