Hydromega reconfigures 20-MW Kapuskasing River sites

Hydromega Services Inc. has reconfigured plans for Kapuskasing River hydro development, proposing four 5-MW powerhouses, rather than two powerhouses once envisioned.

Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources selected Hydromega Services of Montreal in 2005 to develop two hydro sites on the Kapuskasing, 12.5-MW Big Beaver Falls and 5.8-MW White Otter Falls. However, due to concerns raised by the Ministry of Natural Resources, and topographic, geologic, and environmental considerations, Hydromega said it also studied several other options and arrived at the new plan of four 5-MW projects.

The four projects would be built along a 28-kilometer stretch of the northern extent of the Kapuskasing River, south of the town of Kapuskasing. They would be called Big Beaver Falls, Camp Three Rapids, White Otter Falls, and Old Woman Falls. Each would feature two turbine-generators and an overflow weir. A new 25-kV transmission line would be built to connect the plants to the transmission grid.

Hydromega said three First Nations - Brunswick House, Chapleau Ojibway, and Chapleau Cree - demonstrated an interest in the hydropower development of the river's northern reach. The company said the First Nations would have an opportunity to become partners in the development of that part of the river, and to own an interest in one or more of the hydro facilities.

In February, Hydromega announced it reached an agreement in principle with the Brunswick House and Chapleau Ojibway First Nations that would facilitate development. Hydromega and its aboriginal partners plan to continue an environmental assessment of the projects. If all permits are in place by the end of 2007 as anticipated, construction could start in spring 2008.
