OpenHydro to equip Channel Islands' Alderney Tidal

Marine turbine developer OpenHydro Group Ltd. of Ireland announced a contract March 13 from Alderney Renewable Energy to supply turbine-generators to the Alderney Tidal Power project in the Channel Islands.

OpenHydro is to install an array of its Open-Centre Turbines on the sea bed at Alderney, one of the British dependency Channel Islands off the coast of France.

Alderney Renewable Energy was formed in 2004 by Alderney business people to exploit the large tidal resource off the island. It signed an agreement in 2005 with the States of Alderney, giving ARE five-year exclusivity for tidal and wave development, subject to meeting certain targets.

ARE's initial goal is to deploy a trial tidal power generation unit by December 2010 and to evaluate fully the economic potential and environmental effect of tidal power farms.

OpenHydro said the Alderney investment would total several million euros, with generating units to be deployed in 2008-2009. It estimated tidal flows at Alderney could generate 3,000 MW for Europe's power grid if fully developed.

OpenHydro wins Scottish funds for second Orkney unit

In February, OpenHydro was awarded 1.214 million pounds (US$2.37 million) by the government of Scotland to install a second 250-kW Open-Centre Turbine in Scotland's Orkney Islands. (HNN 2/22/07)

That unit is to be installed at the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) being developed at Orkney. OpenHydro said it was the first company to install a tidal turbine at the test facility.
