  • FERC adds free-flowing rivers to ocean conference

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has added free-flowing river projects to a technical conference planned Dec. 6 on the status of new hydroelectric technologies that generate electricity from ocean waves, tides, and currents.

Free-flowing river projects were not included in the original announcement about the meeting, issued in September. FERC added the subject in a supplemental notice Nov. 8.

An agenda issued with the new notice indicates all five FERC commissioners will attend and make opening remarks. George Hagerman, senior research associate, Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute, will present an overview of resource, technology, and business issues.

The agenda includes panels on environmental, financial, and regulatory issues. (HNN 9/18/06) An open forum also is planned.

The conference is planned from 1-5 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Commission Meeting Room on the second floor of FERC's offices at 888 First St., N.E., Washington, D.C. FERC said all interested persons can attend. There is no fee or registration.

A free Internet webcast of the event will be available through www.ferc.gov under Calendar of Events. The calendar listing will contain a link to its webcast.

Anyone interested in participating in the workshop through video teleconference from one of the commission's regional offices should call or e-mail staff by Nov. 22, FERC said. Regional offices are located in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Portland, and San Francisco.
